Choosing The Right Insulation

Choosing the right insulation can be the most important step in making your home and roof energy-efficient and more comfortable, so you will need to take that very seriously. It will keep your home cooler in summer, warmer in winter and may also save your home from condensation if done right. You should aim to learn more about it however before you make a choice.

The Differences In Insulation R-Values

Different insulations have different R-values. What is R-value you say? Well put simply, the R-value that is used to rate its ability to withstand heat transfer. This keeps temperatures stable with its properties. Let’s begin with some of the most commonly used insulation types:

Different Types

Fiberglass Insulation

One of the most used types, a traditional choice that happens to be what most people picture in their heads when it comes to insulation. Fiberglass comes in a variety of sizes and thickness, ranging from an R-rating of R-13 to R-38, depending on said factors and how its used in construction efforts.

Molded Expanded Polystyrene

It is very close in structure to foam boards, making it an extremely easy type of insulation you can work with. This insulation can be cut, trimmed and more to fit whatever needs you may have as well as most surfaces. This kind of insulation comes in sizes of 1-2 inches of thickness, varying in their R-rating between R-4 to R-8. Their light weight and ease of use is what makes them one of the preferred choices around the world.

Extruded  Polystyrene

It is a type of insulation which looks pretty much the same way as the previous example, used in much the same manner. There is a major difference between them however, as the R-rating of both materials is slightly different due to their construction. It ranges in thickness from 1-2 inches again, with R-ratings of R-5 to R-10.

Polyurethane and Polyisocyanurate

These are two types of insulation which look much like foam board. The difference between them and polystyrene is that they are much less rigid, as a result making them a more flexible choice that works better on a number of surfaces. Its thickness is usually around an inch, having an R-rating between R-7 and R-8.

Cellulose

A more eco-friendly solution, its made of newspapers, discarded paper products and so forth. This can be either sprayed on in layers or applied in other ways. It has an R-rating between 3.4 and 3.8 and its usually applied in 1-inch thickness increments.

Reflective Insulation

This type of insulation aims to reflect the heat back toward its source, being made up of layers of reflective materials such as cardboard and aluminum foil or bubble wrap made of aluminum foil. Its possible to reflect up to 97% of the heat radiated by objects. This gives it an R-rating between R-1.1 and R-18, depending on the materials and construction.

How to Hire Reputable Roofing Companies

With so many people offering roofing services, you might feel a little overwhelmed and uncertain of if you are working with the right company. Your roof is one of the most important features of your house because it protects you, your family and your belongings from harsh weather elements. Therefore, you want to make sure that your roofing contractor in Virginia is reliable. Here are four ways to ensure you hire reputable roofing companies.

Finding Reputable Roofing Companies

When you are shopping around for contractors, one of the first things you should ensure is that they are licensed. That means they are certified to do the work up to code. Additionally, they should carry insurance that protects you from being held liable in the event that an accident occurs. You can ask reputable roofing companies for proof of their license and insurance.

Online Research

One of the best ways to find quality professional roofers is online. You can find thousands of roofers near you online.

On top of that, you can then check out their website and reviews about the company. Does the website look sophisticated and clean? Does it tell you they are licensed and provide you with the license number? Do they have any testimonials on the site?

Do third party reviews have a similar attitude to the reviews on the website? What is the all-around sentiment of the company?

All of these questions can be answered with simple online searches. This is by far the best place to start your search.

Referrals

You can also rely on referrals to find a good roofing contractor. Ask your friends or family if they have used someone they would recommend. If you do not know anyone who has a trusted contractor, you can ask reputable roofing companies you are considering to provide you with references so you can speak to other people who have utilized their services.

Good Communication

A sign of a good contractor is someone who will have good communication with you throughout the entire process. He or she should return your phone calls in a timely manner and address any concerns you might have. Contractors should always provide you a written estimate for the work they are going to do. This will enable you to compare numbers with other companies you are considering to ensure you hire someone who fits your budget as well as your roofing needs.

Hiring reputable roofing companies does not have to be a stressful process. Through doing a little bit of homework, you can ensure you are working with someone who is trustworthy. Make sure they are licensed and insured before they start any work on your home. Ask for references and get as much as you can in writing, especially an estimate for the work.

It also represents the stability of the household and the shelter it offers. Your roof represents a vital part of the home, the feeling of comfort when you step inside at the end of a day. Which is why having that comfort disrupted by a leak or other damage can be such a concern. Especially during turbulent fall and winter weather, your roof can be at risk for damage from rain, snow, hail, and even falling trees. For others, the wear occurs over time. An old roof can suddenly find itself with multiple leaks to stop up. This is where a roofing repair company comes in. Proper Roof Protection

There are a variety of solutions for roofing in Fredericksburg, depending on the customer’s needs, whether they be budgetary, schedule related, or otherwise. Many involve plastic cement which is generally good for repair. However, stronger and longer lasting solutions such as flashing cement may also be available. The right company will often first examine the roof and evaluate its needs. They will determine the proper roof protection needed, and how extensive the repair must be. Some may even offer such an evaluation simply to check up on your roof and anticipate future problems. Ensure that You Have a Qualified Contractor

It can seem overwhelming when you need to find a good roofing contractor. Of course you want someone who will do a quality job and provide you with a roof that lasts. However, you also do not want to spend more than you have to. You may become frustrated because you do not feel qualified to decide who will be likely to do a good job. Luckily, there are two manageable steps to finding a qualified contractor. You can then compare contractors based on your specific needs. First, ask for proof of licensure. Second, research the candidate by seeking information online, asking about insurance coverage, and calling references.

Finding a Qualified Contractor

If you are hiring a contractor to perform your roofing needs, you may want to be sure that he or she is properly licensed along with the team of workers. The required licensure for a qualified contractor may vary depending on where you live, but you can obtain information online from your area’s Department of Professional Regulation. In addition, some roofing products require that installers have certain licensure or certification for the warrantee to be honored. With a little research, you can find the base requirements for your project. Once you know what licenses or certifications your contractor needs, request proof from any candidates that they meet this requirement.

Find Reviews

Next, research all the remaining candidates by evaluating their websites and online reviews. Also, obtain proof of insurance and ask for references. It is possible that a good contractor may not have a company website. Even if they do not, reviews may still be available online. If you either cannot find information online or everything you find seems to be good, you may want to ask for proof of insurance. In some areas, contractors do not need insurance. However, you need to consider any liability that you may have if an uninsured roofer is injured on your property. Insurance can protect both you and the roofers. Do not be afraid to ask for references. Calling others that have hired the contractor can give you quality feedback about what to expect.

With a little research you can find the right roofing contractor for you. If you first eliminate any unqualified contractors, you can then speak to the remaining good candidates to determine which qualified contractor will best meet your needs.

Finding a qualified contractor that is right for the job takes time, but with these tips you’ll be able to find the perfect roofer for all your needs!

Finding a Competent Roofer

It is true that homes are probably most people’s biggest investment.  After all, there are many hoops and hurdles one must grow through in order to even qualify for a home loan. Not to mention that painful down payment, mortgage, insurance, utilities.  Yes, the list goes on and on. Of course, once you sign your life away you are only beginning to understand the true cost of home ownership.  Maintenance and repairs play a huge part in sustaining your home’s integrity.  If you’ve neglected a leaky roof, chances are the water damage could become a huge cost.  That is why finding a competent roofer or roofing contractor will not only save you a headache of dealing with inadequate service but ultimately will help you and your house save money over the roof’s lifetime.

When to Call a Professional

Whether you are a new, proud owner of a charming mid-century modern home or have been enjoying a residence for years, the chances are that your roof may need inspecting. It is usually recommended that homeowners biannually inspect their roofs for any sign of damage.

If any shingles are absent or cracked, this may suggest damage. Other indicators include moldy surfaces, collecting debris in gutters, loose materials, and moisture or rot. It is important to take precautions when inspecting a roof to avoid an accident or injury. Tile roofs should be inspected from a distance, because walking on them could cause them to break.

What Makes a Competent Roofer?

A competent roofer or contractor should be someone that you might know through word of mouth.  If someone in your neighborhood is getting their roof replaced, make sure to check on the status. Ask their thoughts about whether the work was done in a timely manner.  Chances are if they’re happy with their contractor they will be more than happy to recommend them to someone else.  Does your contractor have a website? If so, take a look at it and check the comment section.  If someone is dissatisfied with work, they may leave a negative comment or two, however, if you’re still not convinced consider going to the Better Business Bureau to see if anyone else has also lodged complaints.

Finding a Roofer

Try interviewing a couple of different roofing contractor candidates and see which you feel more comfortable with.  If things seem a little unsure right from the get go, imagine what might happen if a very big problem develops down the road.   Your contractor should instill confidence and take care of any issues that arise.  You will want to feel confident in your choice and best of all, confident with that new roof when the seasons turn and you are facing months of uncertain weather.

How to Install a Metal Roof over Shingles

The average lifespan of a roof covered with asphalt shingles is usually somewhere around 8-10 years, but that time can sometimes become even less than that, depending on the local conditions and weather patterns. You could opt for a different solution than replacing the entirety of your shingle roof – installing a metal roof over shingles instead. Such metal roofs can last a lot longer than the usual shingles and they are not too difficult to install. They mostly require a minimal amount of maintenance at best. The following tips will provide you with the basics of what you need to know to install a metal roof over shingles.

How to Install a Metal Roof Over Shingles

To install a metal roof, you will follow these steps:

Remove the old vents

You should start by removing the old lead boots that cover most plumbing vents. You will also need to remove the galvanized vents as well as the vinyl or aluminum ridge ventilations.

Install the 1×3’s

Metal roofs can bend and become dented if you step on them, so make sure you add some 1×3 spacers on the existing shingle roof. You should do this before you try installing the metal roof over shingles. If you have stripped down the roof down to its bare plywood bottom, then you won’t have to worry about this at all. Start by using 8d, ring shank nails and attach the 1×3’s into the shingles at about 4-6 inch increments. You will need to make sure you cover the main span of your roof, the valleys and ridges as well as the edges as well. You need to make sure you place them right as they will not only serve as spacers but also as deadwood for each of the screws you need to put in. If you have to deal with larger ventilation stacks you will need to wrap a 1×3 box around each of them as well.

Trim the Pieces

Up next comes the installation of drip edge trim pieces. You must attach them with galvanized roofing nails at about 4 to 6 inches apart. You must start at the bottom side of the roof. Then work your way up to the top so you could make a water tight trim with a drip edge. Overlap the pieces at about 2 inches or so so they won’t leak. If you have roofs that pitch less than a 3/12 you should make sure you have more overlapping to ensure they are good enough.

Panel installation

The roofing panels should be attached by starting with the most windy side of the roof. You must attach them with roof screws with a butyl grommet so they won’t allow leaks. Make sure you space the panels and align them properly before you screw them down to the old roof. Add side trim panels and roof peak panels and the vent colors to finish the roof.

Asphalt Shingles Installation Guidelines

There are many benefits to having an asphalt shingles or tile roof, however before you can be happy with a job well done you will need to do a good deal of prep work. The following tips will give you the basics of what you can expect during your next asphalt shingles roofing installation project.

Guidelines for Installing Asphalt Shingles

The following are all the guidelines you should take into consideration when installing asphalt shingles.

Underlayment

You should begin by making sure you have the proper layer of underlayment and the roof edging. Without them you will not be able to create a good, stable and waterproof roof. Make sure you are as thorough as possible or otherwise you will experience a great deal of problems further down the line.

Permit

Once you have a proper permit if you needed to obtain one, you should strip your floor clean and then nail the drip edge flashing along the eave of your roof.

Research

The heavy rains of sudden storms or persistent melting snow can eventually force water down between even the best of shingles. The worst you can ever experience in most cases are the so-called ice dams. These are essentially areas of frozen water or snow which stick around on the edges of the roof. These can absolutely destroy the lower shingles of the roof, thus allowing water to drip inside your home. You should guard against it by applying some waterproof underlayment which acts like a barrier against the ice. You can easily find them at roofing supply stores or centers. There may be specific rules about its installation, so check up with your local building inspector to ensure you’re doing it right.

Layering

Make sure you cover the rest with a asphalt-saturated felt underlayment. The layers must overlap each other by 2 inches at least. You should follow this by nailing a drip edge on the rakes of the roof and the top of the underlayment. Much like it is with the flashing, you should always make sure the pieces overlap each other at all times. The felt you’re installing will help keep the roof dry before you apply the shingles and will protect you against heavy rain and storms.

Shingling

Find the center of the roof at the eave and the top and then put a vertical chalk line. You can use that to begin the shingling, working to the left and right at the rakes. Manufacturers of shingles often recommend you start working at the left edge. Make sure to check out the packages and what they say about it.

The first few rows of shingles on the roof need a line of shingles with cut tabs. You should apply them on the eave with adhesive strip. Make sure the row is overhanging a bit and beyond the drip edge. This so-called starter course will protect the roof by filling in the joints of the following row of shingles below them.

Once you’re done with this you should nail the first of the rows of shingles right on the top of the starter course. Use four nails per shingle or as it is explained on the package, depending on the amount of wind in the area.

Characteristics of the Best Roofing Company

It goes without saying that having a quality roof over your head is of major importance. A good roof does much more than simply keep you warm and cozy while the winter weather rages outdoors. It protects the structure of your home from the elements and prevents the foundation from rotting due to buildup of mold and mildew. By doing so, a good roof helps you maintain the value and livability of your home. To make sure that you get a roof that will provide proper protection for years to come, you should choose a top-notch, best roofing company.

Finding the Best Roofing Company

First of all, you should check to see that the best roofing company you choose has a license. Laying down a brand new roof requires a lot of experience and skill. You should not be trying to do any of the work yourself, nor should any under-qualified “one man show” companies. Then you should look at reviews of licensed companies. See whether they have a reputation for providing quality work within their clients’ budgets. Getting a new roof is extremely expensive, and it can be a big help to hire a company that knows how to keep costs down (without compromising quality, of course). You can obtain quotes from a number of different contractors and compare them. You should select contractors that are locally based. This way, you can verify all their information with the nearest Chamber of Commerce. The contractor that you ultimately choose to work with will be responsible for all the roofing repairs and replacements.

Next, check to see if the company offers insurance against workers getting hurt on the job. Without this insurance, you as the homeowner could be liable for any accidents or injuries that may occur during the repair.

Even if you order to have the best and longest-lasting materials used to repair or replace your roof, if they are not installed properly, they will not meet the advertised performance levels. Make sure that your roofing company offers warranties to certify that you are getting what you expect from your repair.

It also helps tremendously if you use a company that has experience with filing insurance paperwork. The stress and hassle of dealing with a repair is enough to contend with, without having to add on trouble dealing with your homeowner insurance company.

Conclusion

Although it may seem like an afterthought, you should also verify that the best roofing company you choose will clean up your property as soon as they finish the job. You should actually get the company to put this in writing. If the company you hire does not clean up the yard, you could be in danger of stepping on nails and other sharp objects. Not to mention that you might have to spend several days cleaning up the mess yourself!

Selecting a Roof Company

Deciding to find a roof company to replace or repair the roof of your home can be a bit daunting. The process can be rather expensive and the important considerations to take in can seem overwhelming. However, one thing that individuals can do in order to alleviate at least some of the stress from the situation, is to select a roofing company which will bring them the customer satisfaction they deserve. When looking over the variety of companies and contractors that you could potentially employ, there might not seem to be any significant difference between the different options. However, there are a number of steps you can take to differentiate between the companies. It will bring you peace of mind, and those that might be less effective in providing solutions.

Selecting the Right Roof Company

The first thing to look at when considering a roof company or contractor, is the licensing credentials. Making sure that the roof company has all of the required and applicable business licenses will filter out a huge portion of shoddy roofing options. You can further defend yourself against scams and swindlers by verifying the legitimacy of the company. Ask for their contact info (business address, website, email, office phone, etc.) as well as their tax identification number. Requesting the contractor’s proof of insurance is also a great way to protect yourself against liability. It’s important that a roof company has the proper insurance. This includes worker’s compensation and liability coverage. It’s important because it can protect you from potential lawsuits. As well as prove that the contractor is observant and professional.

Reading online reviews is an excellent way to arm yourself against sub-par roofers. Drawing upon the past experiences of others will help you to avoid their follies and reap the advantages of other people beneficial experiences. If you are not able to find any reviews on a certain company, then asking the contractor for a list of past clients and references can provide the same benefits. In areas of craftsmanship, reputation can say a lot about the quality of work you can expect.

Avoiding Scams

You may have heard of the most common scam, the “storm chaser”.

These scams may come over the phone, at your door, or in your mailbox.  They offer quotes and repairs to your home right after storms have passed.  To avoid being scammed by these Storm Chasers, there are a couple of things you should always look for:

See if they are from your area, or if they are out of state.  Often times these scammers are out of state hunters, making it easier for them to abandon you.  Research the company your talking to in depth.  Make sure they are legit with possible references, certificates, and if they have a local office nearby.  If they come to your door offering sales-y “Free Roofing” deductibles, then they are most likely “Storm Chasers!”

Selecting the right company takes time, but you can do it with these tips.
